About The Book Garden

The Book Garden is proudly Australian owned and currently celebrating 38 years.  They are part of the American Bookstore and have a physical location in Brisbane.

“Our Story

A momentous event took place in a Sydney garage on September 14th 1980.

Encouraged by our father (bookseller Maurice Zavelsky), we (Deborah and Carmel) began The Book Garden.
We started the business with a tiny budget, a small range of stock and two cars. We split Sydney into two sales areas and began visiting schools and childcare centres with boxes of books for sale.

After the death of Maurice in July 1981, Deb moved to Brisbane. It was here that The Book Garden put down roots inside American Bookstore.

Magic Fish Dreaming heads to Sacramento, United States

More wonderful feedback on the journey of our book!

Magic Fish Dreaming

daybeforereading June – day before reading at Riverbend and receiving the following message

I presented “Magic Fish Dreaming” to the Courtyard Private School in Sacramento. They were thrilled and there was much discussion about the package. So many oohs and aahs could be heard in the administration offices.

The posters will be framed and hung in various locations including the library.

Someone read the poems aloud as the others listened. Your book was so loved by the staff!

And I’m a hero for donating to the school. I will do a follow up in a few months for additional feedback.

Well done, June!! I am so proud to call you a friend!
